Bretton Powell, MD

Dr. Bretton Powell is a board-certified internist providing personalized, comprehensive care to patients throughout Hilton Head Island and the surrounding Lowcountry. He is committed to delivering attentive, compassionate, and relationship-based medical care that focuses on prevention, chronic disease management, and overall wellness.

Originally from West Virginia, Dr. Powell grew up on his family’s small farm, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and dedication—qualities that have guided him throughout his career in medicine. His path to becoming a physician was inspired by a deeply personal experience: witnessing his father’s life-saving liver transplant and the profound impact of skilled, compassionate medical care. That moment solidified his calling to help others during their most challenging times.

Dr. Powell attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, where he excelled academically and later earned his medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, receiving extensive training in primary care, hospital medicine, and critical care.

Following residency, Dr. Powell returned to his hometown to practice inpatient, outpatient, and ICU medicine at Pleasant Valley Hospital. In 2019, he relocated to Huntington, working as a night hospitalist, where he provided critical, around-the-clock care. His compassion and expertise were especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he served on the front lines to care for patients and their families in crisis.

After years of demanding hospital work, Dr. Powell transitioned into concierge internal medicine to create more meaningful patient relationships and provide truly individualized care. His approach emphasizes accessibility, continuity, and proactive health management, ensuring every patient receives the time, attention, and expertise they deserve.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Powell values time with his family and continues to honor his father’s legacy of strength and perseverance.
